I mean, an illiterate person is not neccessarily an ignorant person. There are sorts of knowledge, for example, if a carpenter, a sailor, or a cobbler cannot read and write, but he has his own knowledge.

Illiteracy And Ignorance

One can be ignorant of any thing that is attached to the knowledge of a subject. Ignorance is lack of knowledge, not told about something, lack of information, etc.
There is an old saying around here,"Ignorance breeds ignorance". Actions sometimes speak louder than words and explain the reason why we use it so loosely.

Illiteracy can be measured by the capabilities of ones fundamental acts of reading or writing or lack there of.

Some people are dyslexic, etc. which makes it hard for them to keep up with the average bear, not to say that they don't have a good memory to compensate for the short comings.
If you find someone like that, help make a difference and help change a life.

Ignorance is living in a way that ignores common social ideas. Illiteracy is the limited or non-functioning ability to use and understand written symbols of language. The definitions clearly point out the differences. A 'good reader' can be an ignorant person and a 'poor reader' can be highly aware socially.

You are correct. Ignorance means the lack of knowledge of something. For example, "He is ignorant of the law regarding manslaughter." Illiterate means you cannot read or write. One can be literate and ignorant as well, and one can be ignorant and illiterate too. They mean totally different things. BTW, when someone says, "you are ignorant," they usually mean you are without social graces.

Chow!!

Ignorance simply means lack of knowledge. Illiteracy means inability to read. A person could be quite knowledgable about a subject but be unable to read. Likewise a person could be able to read but know nothing about a particular subject making them ignorant.

Ignorance is lack of knowledge in any subject or event.

Illiteracy is one who does not read or write proficiently.
It could be considered an ignorance but most of the time it is a result of incompetence of the school system.
Just FYI -a person who is ignorant and illiterate can be a genius because they are not a measure of intelligence.

Illiteracy pertains to persons who did not enter the traditional school of legal learning from Elementary to High School to College education. So you can not call a child illiterate.
