I love to play with and work on my computers. Mostly though, I want to be able to surf the web more often. The trouble is, however, between working 2 jobs, 7 days a week, and traveling from home to work and back for a total of 4 hrs a day, walking and riding various forms of public transportation, I don’t get much time. I recently bought a laptop with wireless networking capabilities so that I might do some surfing while on my 45 min. train ride but haven’t been able to because I can’t connect to a network. How can I get around this?

The wireless notebook is looking for a wireless access point. The commuter train does not have an on board wireless access point and you are not at any stationary point long enough to get access.

There is an alternative. Sprint, ATT, and Verizon all offer a mobile internet that uses the cellular phone network. These carriers rolled out this service in major cities 2 years ago and continue to expand. You will need a pcmcia card from the carrier for this and it will cost about $60 / mo. Make sure the carrier you select has strong signals where your commuter train goes or you will be disappointed.

Standard wireless need a close range connection to ahotspot or home or office router. For true roaming you need a cellular card, this can be a very expensive way to connect.

Go to your cell dealer and get a wireless card that plugs in. There is software to install and the price up front looks big but there is usually a discount. I say your cell dealer because there is a good discount if you have a cell account

If your laptop has built in wireless can can have windows search for any signals. To do this go to start/control panel/wireless network setup. That should set up the ability for your laptop to "find" any signals. If you do not have built in wireless, then you would have to purchase wireless network card. Hope that helps.

you haven't mentioned your country or location or else you could search up service providers from your area and ask for options...

in my place such long distance wireless connectivity can be provided by a gprs or a cdma modem...which are wireless though. i suppose the 3g mobile networks should be faster.

You can't unless you have a wireless access card, or unless there's a wireless access point around you. Sorry.
