The mayans did not predict that the world would end on December 21, 2012. That date is simply the end of their 'long count' calendar. It is equivalent to, let us say, a December 31, 1999 (Remember? that is when all the computers exploded and we all died).
They picked that date (and that is a surprising thing) because that is the date of winter solstice when (over a period of 25,800 years) the sun is closest to the apparent line towards the centre of the Galaxy. After that year, the position of the Sun, at the moment of winter solstice, will be further and further away from the Galactic centre. This happens every 25,800 years.
There are exactly 5 Mayan long counts in the precession period of 25,800 years. (Every time I look at Mayan astronomy, I am impressed by how accurately they calculated certain things -- like the synodic period of Venus).
Astronauts are in the habit of going in space. Astronomers would be the ones to predict things and they never predicted that the Sun will reverse or anything that foolish.
As for getting full data on this, unfortunately, you will find a lot more false information than true information on the web. This will be like Y2k, or the scare when Earth went through the tail of Halley's comet a century ago (we were all going to be poisoned unless we purchased this guy's gas mask).

well the mayan created a calander which predicted that at the end of the long count was in the year 3000 somthing. which translated into dec 21. 2012 because they knew nothing of AD and BC. on this day many amazing things will happen. the sun will be perfectley level with the center of the galaxy and will have completed another revolution around the galaxy. this happens only once in every 26000 years! next the earth will be perfectley level with the sun, whcih means we will be level with the center of the galaxy. this also happens every 26000 years. also some planets will line up. i believe jupiter, saturn and uranus line up. the mayan also have these things that last a few decades. (im sorry, i forget what they are called) there are many different ones and they are predicted. right now we are in this one where the main mayan god will appear and fight darkness. but they have some predicted for after this event that ends in 2012. they also have a prophecy that says that half of the people will have food and the other half will have misfortune. somthing amazing will happen in 2012, but i do not believe the end of the world. i have never heard anything about the rotation of the sun changing. that would take an amazing amount of energy. it wont happen.
dec. 21 2012 is the end of the mayan calander of the 5th world. many people can interperate things differentley. if the world does end, then it doesnt matter anyhow. if it doesnt end then it will be another day just like any other.
dont get yourself worried.

The Mayans had an elaborate calendar system. Since the Mayan civilization died out about 600 years ago, there was no need for them to develop their calendar beyond 2012, which is the end of a long cycle involving the orbits of Earth and Venus.
The rotation of the Sun will not reverse, but the magnetic field of the Sun will reverse, as it has every 11 years as far back as there are records.
There is no reason to believe the world will end in 2012.

Well in 2012 the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar
will end, where they believed the Mayan gods would
visit Earth, most of them looked like reptiles!
They didn't know about the Christian calendar
Anno Domini and Before Christ (Christ Era),
which we use today.
Mayan (Mesoamericans)'s 2012 A.D. is 3,000!
Well if the sun goes the other way around, the
gravitational would go haywire and possibly
cause the planet to stop spinning!
I don't think it will... But then again, who knows?

I don't know if they "predicted" it, per se, but that's the popular belief. It's just that the calendar they made just ended on that date. Maybe the guy making the calendar had a sudden heart attack...who knows?
Nah, actually, if you really want to know, go read 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, by Daniel Pinchbeck. He goes into great detail, and off on some other tangents as well, but he does a good job of explaining it.
Basically, the Mayans believed the world had 5 different time "periods", or "ages." On December 12, 2012, it is the end of one age, and the start of another. Something based around birth, growth, prosperity, decline, and destruction. It makes more sense when you read it than how I'm trying to explain.

No, the world is not going to end. Astronauts don't know anything besides piloting space shuttles - I think you mean astronomers. And no, no one is saying the rotation of the Sun will reverse. There's no known mechanism for that. Even if it did somehow happen, you wouldn't even notice. There would be no effect on the Earth.
Don't believe everything you hear.

I doubt there's any relevant information describing the end of the world on 2012...that's actually has creditability in the scientific/historic communities. Honestly, the world could very well end at any given point. No one fully understands what is actually taking place in our own planet's core. Another example...an asteroid/comet could slam into the world causing the same thing that supposedly happened to Mars billions of year's ago.

"And I looked, and behold a pale green horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." Revelations 6:8
Various religious people have envisioned several end-time scenarios. The Mayans were deeply religious in their beliefs so it isn't surprising that they would attempt to calculate when the end will come to the exact year.
There have been some of the best selling books written on the subject. If you are interested the most popular is 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck

Simple
- The Mayans were high on hallucinogenic drugs.
- Astronauts which say this have been in space too long
- The world won't end in 2012 in this way because modern calculations of this date maybe wrong.
- No serious scientist will believe this, they will laugh at it and walk away.
