Cars and trucks galore were being built in Detroit at the time. The artists came out of detroit as well. Whoever coined it was putting motor city together with town to arrive at motown.

Detroit is the city where all three major U.S. car manufacturers were once headquartered. That has since changed due to Toyota and Honda. You can thank the United Auto Workers Union for that.
