As was said you have a novelty item. As soon as a special coin comes out, people try to figure out how to profit by it. The state quarters are available hand painted, gold plated like yours and even platinum plated. The American silver eagle is available in those forms also. Even though they have no value as collector coins, a set of the 50 state gold quarters in a nice holder on the wall would get a lot of attention.

Your quarter has been electroplated outside of the Mint by someone who had nothing better to do, or by some company to be sold as novelty items for a few dollars each. Sorry, to a hobbyist it's an altered coin and worth not more than its face, and the gold layer is too thin to be worth anything significant. But it's an interesting conversation piece nevertheless.

It's probably one of the gold dollar coins they brought out. They are about the same size as a quarter so easy to mistake. The also have a flat edge (like a nickle or penny) not a milled edge (like a quarter or dime)

I bet It's a gold dollar. Look up gold dollar on the web and see if it looks like that. If it doesn't ask a coin collector or a bank.

If it is a quarter then it's a collector edition and is gold plated, it's worth a little more but it isn't solid gold..
