1. Learn about turtles. There is a right way to care for each species, and a LOT of wrong ways.

Some of the answers you already got illustrate the wrong ways.
- Properly set-up turtle habitats do not smell (but a good filter will cost you $50-100 by itself!)
- You do not feed most turtles lettuce (especially light green head lettuce- that is a NO NO for ALL turtles!)
- Turtles need BIG tanks to feel safe and happy, not dinky bvowls or small aquaria.

A good site for research is http://www.austinsturtlepage.com and their sister forums.

2. When one of my kids wants a pet, they must know these things.
- Do you know the right way to care for it, now and as an adult animal?
- How will you pay for it, its food, and its supplies (especially important for a turtle since the set-up can easily cost $200!)

3. Finally, they must SHOW ME responsibility. If they cannot keep up on their current jobs well, how can they add new jobs to their day?

So...
a.) Do your jobs with minimal complaining or reminding
b.) research what turtle you want and what it needs
c.) make a simple presentation for your mom outlining what you learned.

(Hint: My daughter wanted a Zebra Finch and put together a nice booklet with printouts about the animal, what kind of housing and diet it needs, pictures of the cage and food she was going to get, how much it all cost, etc. She had her finch a couple weeks later!)

Just Tell Ur Parents That By Having A Turtle, It Will Teach U How To Have Responsibility And That It Could Change Ur Life In Some Ways Like Not Being Mean Any More. And That Is All.

Hi!!! well the first thing you must do is you must show to your parents that you are a responsible pet owner, turtles smell a lot if not properly taken care of.. next is research good facts about turtles like which species will fit to your personality, which species are lesser aggressive, what are the things to be used and diets to give, etc. then after you all done that and gathered enough knowledge present it to your parents they will probably amazed and easily convinced…

well first you must show them u are responseable. do some things around the house, take extra care of your other pets (if you have any) and just help youre parents. make sure you have a good reason for the turtle, too. you dont want it just because your best friend says thyre great! also try and save some money. between the cage, foog, and supplies a turtle can get pretty expensive. im trying to convince MY parents of getting a kitten and i know how u feel its not easy! but keep trying and goodluck.

If my kids want a pet they are more likely to get one if they can show me that they are responsible and able to care for it properly.
If you really want one Research breeds and when you decide on one kind learn all that you can about it!
It would also be a good idea to start earning some money to care for it. A turtle is not a "cheap" pet. They need proper housing and lighting and that costs $money$
Show your parents that you are completely deticated to providing the best home possible for your turtle and you never know...they might believe you :)

It isnt mean to keep a turltle. I have one and all you do is feed it turtle food, and lettauce. You dont have to clean the tank too often, if you get a good filter on it. They like to be in water, they dont drown. They can stink only if you dont have a filter on the tank. Just try to tell her it isnt mean, do a little research and show her what you find.

it depends on what kind of turtle it is and how often you handle it. my aunt has 3 turtles: 2 aquatic turtles and one box turtle that almost got crushed by the tractor. the one aquatic turtle is too timid, the other bites; however, the box turtle is so tame and potty trained to go on puppy pads! i also have two aquatic turtles & only one of them bites.

The staff at Petsmart and Petco can help. Plus, their websie offers little care brochures.

well first read up on the requirements for them...their entire comlete setup in which they will thrive in will be more than 100$ so maybe if you proove you have enough money to get the right setup....
wnyherp.org has a whole list of caresheets for turtles and you should read up on what they want...they need more than just water to be in !

Do some research on turtles, and how to care for them. Then go to your parents and let them know you did your homework, and know all about turtles, what they need, and how to care for them. Make them confident that you are serious about this, and that you intend to take care of your turtle - without it interfering with them, or your responsibilites.
