The American people forget to quickly why it is that we are in this war.. why we have sent our men and women over to Iraq to shed their blood.. and we as a nation have done that over and over again over many wars. I support the President although I might not agree ever aspect of the war... we are at war to protect our nation from further attacks.. and the people who think that this war is doing nothing should think about how may other attacks might have happened had we not gone to war and beefed up security here in the USA.
If we pull out the nation will blame the President BUT the real blam should be on those who want to quit before the job is done.
It will be up to the American people to use their voice to place the blam where it should be.. but ultimatly it is not about blam but about protecting this great nations and it's people.

I am curious when people talk of defeat in Iraq what is victory? Didn't GW tell us we had won months ago? If we won, then how can we be defeated? Or did GW get it wrong and we never won?
The fact is that you cannot talk about the war in Iraq in terms of victory or defeat. If we stop using the bumper sticker phrase war or terror and start talking in concrete terms we can then talk in terms of victory or defeat. In that case we can have real defined goals
1) Victory in Afghanistan: This means that the Taliban is defeated and the democratic government secure. The Taliban is outlawed the same way the Nazis are in Germany
2) Victory over El Quida: This means that Osman Bin Linden and his key personal are dead or capture and the financing for further crime is cut off. This victory is much more akin to defeating the Mafia then defeating an army. We need to in the words of Deep Throat "Follow the Money" even if it leads, as it likely will, to our friends in Saudi Arabia
3) Victory in Iraq: More complicated, on the one hand we have won by ousting Sadamm, now we need to bring all the three major fractions to the table and assist them as they negotiate a peace. This victory is a combination of political where we meet with ALL people from the area including Syria and Iran and Military where we act as a peace keeping force. This will not be easy. Here Democrats are wrong to think we can just leave. We can;t we cause a problem we need to fix it, and Republicans are wrong to think we can achieve victory without diplomacy
4) Victory in the Region: The cool thing is if we are big enough to reach out to Syria and Iran and negotiate a peace in Iraq, and we defeat the money flow to El Quedia we may be able to pull together enough good will to force Hamas and Israel to the table and with all the players in the region involved: Jordan, Egypt, Saudi, Iraq, Syria, and Iran find a peaceful two state solution to the Palestrina problem
Of course this will take leadership and nerve and humility and the ability to compromise and the ability to lose some to win more from American leadership. And given the current crop of hatred on both sides of the American spectrum, this is a lost cause. Which is s a shame because all of this is within our ability if we would just stop hating each other. If we could get past GW's lack of an IQ and Bill Clinton's need for a BJ. Ah but that is asking too

undesirable, undesirable, undesirable. the subsequent president won't be able to pull out the troops from Iraq. To plenty artwork has nevertheless yet to be performed. in simple terms as a results of fact we've just about completely pushed Al Queda out of the republic, that still does no longer mean the the activity is over. Do to this certainty, Iraqi officers are inquiring for a US protection rigidity presence in Iraq on up into the 2020's. I additionally consider Gator (dude that responded above me). He has quite summed it up.

The president will be blamed for that also that is the libs best game now to blame no matter what. The two best examples are Katrina where dams and levees that had been built over 50 years failed and Bush was blamed and the problems at Walter Reed Medical Hospital that has been allowed to be run down for decades but Bush takes the blame again. But if we do cut and run you can be sure the terrorists will put this in their knowledge base like Beirut, the Cole, the embassy bombings, etc and know the Americans do not hold their position and will always give up once a few body bags are sent home thus the terrorists control us.

I will hold the Bush administration responsible just for starting this war (the war in Afghanistan was justified). If an Iraqi terrorist appears on our soil, it will be because of the war, not if we pull out or not. Why? Since Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 no matter what you were tricked into believing. I hold our foreign policy responsible for that fateful day, which was molded by both Clinton and Bush(s) and others before.

I am not really sure what was the dumbest part of your question. The idea that they will follow us home or the idea that D-Day was an AMERICAN victory and comparing it to the Iraq war. How about you go get the education you deserve and then maybe you will realize that this war is designed to last as long as possible so people can make money off of it.. Who will be to blame, I already blame Bush for war profiteering and spitting on the constitution.

Yeah, when we pull out of Iraq, many will be reassigned to our coastal watch stations..Gotta keep an eye out for the fleets of aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines the enemy has...and we will have to increase NORAD so we can watch for the fighter jets of the enemy heading our way.
Then there are all those intercontinental ballistic missiles the terrorist have - all pointing at our cities. We will have to keep up our defenses against them, fer sure.
Oh, whatever are we going to DO to protect ourselves against such a well-armed bunch of disaffected ragtags? Woe is me! Woe is me!
Easy up, Chicken Little, and THINK about it.

So who is responsible for the civilian and military deaths that have occurred because of the president putting American troops in Iraq?

Please define how we will know we have WON in Iraq. I have yet to hear this from any war supporter.
Until I get a precise definition it is not possible to accurately answer that question. We were told that the mission was accomplished and that Al Qaeda was in its last throes yet we continue. So when will we REALLY have a victory? 2012?2040?2062? When? How will we know it when we see it?

for the hundredth time, this is not a war. but a conflict. before we went in there, America had NO beef with Iraq, only Sadaam.
the insurgents are fighting each other and we are in their trying to mitigate the situation with peace. that is not a war.
