Sometimes you look for the refrigerant oil deposits along the lines that leaks out the same time the freon leaks out to spot a leak. Sometimes they put dye in the system and shine a black light everywhere to see where the leak is. Sometimes they evacuate the whole system to a high vacuum level and know that it has a leak because it won't hold the vaccum.

There could be several things wrong - namely the compressor or a leak. If the compressor is bad - you will have to replace it and on some newer model cars that use a serpentine belt - you have to get it fixed, or it can damage the belt and you'll have a host of other problems.
If it is a leak, most freon has a stain to it and you would see the color leaking from the air conditioner unit. There may be some 'quick fix' stuff that can temporarily seal the leak - but you will have to replace it.
Yes, it bites. I replaced my air conditioner on my van and that still didn't fix the entire problem with the leaks as well - and from what I gather, once you do get one fixed, you have to use it or it will develop cracks as mine did.

I'm going to be honest with you there is no way for you to fix it cheaply, that one will have to be repaired at a shop, they have the tools and equipment to do this with ,it probably has a small leak in it somewhere, and without having the right tools to find this with you will be wasting money on it,there's not much the home mechanic can do these days to repair air conditioners, when they tear up,this is best left to a good shop for fixing it,they can find the leak and repair it,good luck with it.

You have to take it to a repair center. They can put a dye into the system to see where the leak is. Then replace the part where the leak is. Probably will not be cheap because those are high pressure lines and they are not very cheap.

Take your car to someplace like Mieneke. For around $40 they'll check the system and find the bad area or areas. Just guessing will cost you way to much.

Because of the risk of releasing freon into the atmosphere, only certified A/C technicians can legally work on A/C systems. Take it to a qualifed shop.

Unfortunately you need to take it to a repair shop to have it looked at. Unless you want to spend $150-400 to buy a freon detecter to find the leak yourself.

There is not cheap way to find out why. You have basically two choices.
1) Replace it
2) Have it rebuilt
Both options require a qualified mechanic.
