They are probably referring to a hold on your credit line.
When you submit your CC info to the merchant with the order, the merchant will request an authorization from your CC bank. If approved, they get an authorization code that tells the merchant you have the available credit for the charge. The actual transaction may take a few days to process depending on the time of day, etc. Once the charge is processed, you'll see the transaction on your CC statement.
Honestly, with online transactions the delay between authorization and the actual charge going through is pretty small.

As far as I know, credit card hold is when the vendor hasn't actually charged your credit card yet. Therefore, the purchase is not reflected in your balance when it says "credit card hold." I could be wrong but that is my take on it.

Your checking the status of an order and it says on credit card hold? I suspect your credit card is not being approved. I'd check with your cc company.

They don't debit the account until the merchants draft comes through, but the hold ensures that you cannot buy so many things that you exceed your limit.
