although unemployment was high, back then they included the homeless, people in bread lines, and people unemployed for an extended (actually indefinite) period of time; today, if your unemployment runs out, you are shortly not counted as unemployment regardless of your status

The Crash that led to the Great Depression was a FAILURE OF BUSINESS, NOT GOVERNMENT; shortly thereafter regulations and safegaurds were put in place as well as cetain social programs as a basic safety net in case of another widespread business failure. Of course, certain future and current Presidents have been systematically removing these in the ironic name of "economic progress".

So Hoover could at least plead ignorance- what about current Presidents?

Herbert Hoover should not be blamed for the Great Depression but in retrospect he could have performed a lot better.

The Great Depression was caused by agricultural problems more than anything else. Poor farming practices were causing dust bowls across the heart of the U.S. Even in that era government money was being spent on agriculture, it could have been spent more wisely.

The banking system was a mess. In those days, government rarely intervened in banking matters, but they sure could have and should have. Banks were loaning people up to 90% on stock they were buying. There were a lot of government rules that could have and should have been enforced. Most of the economy could survive a Wall Street crash but not having the banks close.

Hoover lived by the principles of balancing budgets and avoiding military action. These were good ideas but we know now some well placed government spending could have jump started a very sick economy. We also paid for his anti-military philosophy during WW II.

having an unsophisticated economy..
had more to do with the Depression than anything..

Banking laws that were enacted afterwards..establishing mandates for asset ratios and Insurance were excellent
constraints placed upon them.

Hoover was in a bad place at a bad time..the Country had gone through the post-war boom after WWI and the Country
wasn't ready for the hard-times they encountered..

At least he's not a democrat who wastes money on dumb government programs that see why prisoners want to escape jail.

The president doesn't need to learn anything.

it particularly is an extensive one. Neither possible decide what to do and what to not do. while they did something, something, it went badly. while they desperate to do not something, that went badly as properly. won't be able to get plenty worse than that. for the same reason, Jimmy Carter could be up there as properly.
