IMO the problem is not the government it is that fact that there is no quality control in what the media presents to us.

As a result we have the situation where accuracy is secondary to sensationalism.

In this day and age suppression of current events in the US can only be done with any degree of success by receiving help from the media organizations. This means the government must gain sympathy from them, usually by trying to show that the topic is national security. Today that won't work well, though. Also, a "wag the dog" scenario could be used to great effect. When something is going on which the government wants ignored, they whip up something else to take the front page, like leaking information or announcing something. Another thing to do is wait for some big celebrity nonsense or sport event to happen, and then release the news. Also, they wait for a weekend or for a recess of congress so they can't weigh in easily.

well if your in the USA to the fullest extent...they 100% control all those news channels i have sky at home(as do most) and i switch on sky news it could be coverin some event that happened in iraq and i switch over to Fox news and they would either be very vague or have very different spin on what just happened.

They use a D notice which is voluntary, but I think a lot goes on behind the scenes. Also the libel law can make it expensive if a paper upsets a rich man. On the subject of D notices it is about as voluntary as a factory owner handing over the factory for the benefit of his workers in a communist country Spin doctors are employed to lie as much as they think they can get away with. i don't think there is very much "publish and be damned" in the press to-day in UK

It's not the government. It just looks that way because the government and the media are both virtually controlled by the same corporate sponsors. "Follow the money..."
