Money has to come from somewhere. LBJ tried to institute a number of social programs (the largest number on record), but had no plan as to where that money would originate. Most of his programs had to be cancelled.
The fact is, the majority who have no healthcare insurance planned poorly or not at all. And now due to a false and offensive sense of entitlement, now expect that the rest of us will pick up their tab.
Currently, the law requires that all Emergency Rooms treat whatever comes through their door regardless of a lack of money or insurance. Also, they are required to not only treat to stabilize, but then must make arrangements for continued healthcare. It's an absolutely lousy situation. It's the most expensive place in town.
We have a "Universal Education" system already in place, we must pay regardless of our usage. It produces two basic products, those who are going on to higher education and those who are going out into the work force. The latter, have no discernable marketable skills and will at best be paid minimum wage. And minimum wage was never intended to be a sole means of support.
My recommendation is, if you want to change the situation, get a better education. Fix the education process. Too bad Bush tried with "No Child Left Behind." The teachers unions all dragged heels and have fought it all the way. It was doomed to fail on that point alone.

I'm tired of this "millions don't have health care" rhetoric. Has this actually been an issue for you, or are you just regurgitating what the media has deemed important? People who are sick have access to health care. There are health centers that are free to those with little income. There is Medicare and Medicaid. There is WIC and other programs for poor mothers.

Why does everyone think that you have to have health insurance in order to have access to health care?

I'm sure they care, but cost is an issue. Everything costs money, and increasing health care means increasing taxes or cutting other programs. I know this isn't nice, but the fact is most of these people that can't afford health care are poor. Helping them to live longer is just a drain on the economy.

It's similar to abortion in the fact that, while murder is morally wrong, reversing the decision now will have worse consequences.

Actually, they don't care about any of it. They only thing they care about is getting votes, regardless of how much damage it will do to the country. A politician's only job is to get elected.

Also, nobody in the US goes without health care. Anybody can walk into an E.R., even if they don't have insurance. The tax payers are forced to pay for them. So what's the problem? Nobody is dying in the street.
