By "outs', we mean the number of put-outs that result from an at-bat. If an at-bat results in a double play, that's two "outs".

What player, in his 3 at-bats, hit balls that resulted in the most number of outs for 3 at-bats?

Since no one has ever hit into more than one triple play in a game, the maximum the answer could be is seven. If this has ever happened, however, the information is not readily available. Interesting question though.

But for what is certainly one of the most frustrating single-game performances in baseball history, Joe Torre (yep, that Joe Torre) once grounded into FOUR double plays in one game. Let's review:

21-July-1975, Astros at Mets, Torre (3B) batting third.

Bottom 1st: with one out, 2B Felix Millan singles. Torre grounds into double play.

Bottom 3rd: with one out and a man on first, Millan singles. Torre GIDPs, Millan out at second.

Bottom 6th: leading off, Millan singles. Torre GIDPs again.

Bottom 8th: with no outs, man on first, Millan pokes his fourth single. Torre GIDPs one last time, Millan retired at second.

Final, Astros 6 - Mets 2 (solo homers by Staub and Kingman)

Bob Forsch gets the CG win, with the amazing footnote that he got Torre to tie the major league record for GIDPs (Goose Goslin also did it in 1934).

And poor Felix Millan -- four hits and never got past first base. He had several other four (or more) hit games in his career, but never one this aggravating. Torre provided eight outs in four plate appearances.

Homer "Doc" Smoot of the St. Louis Cardinals hit into a 'quadruple play' in the 6th inning against the New York Giants on 7/1/1903. Not sure what he did in his other at bats but 4 in one at bat is a good start. Ok, technically only 3 outs counted although all 4 men were out.

I remember a game when Aramis Ramirez (then with the Pirates) went 0-5 and made 8 outs. He grounded into 3 double plays and made 2 other outs.
