I haven't seen a IBM desktop in awhile, I didn't care for them a lot because a lot of the equipment was proprietary and hard to upgrade. As far as a machine itself it was pretty solid.
I've used IBM and Dell laptops at several jobs, I really didn't notice much difference in performance, but I preferred the Dell keyboard layout compared to the IBM Thinkpads. I really didn't care for the external parts of the Thinkpad either, but it's really up to the preference of the buyer.
If I had the money, I'd buy Dell's XPS system instead. I've been impressed with what I've seen of that line, both desktop and laptop. Plus, the tech support at U.S. call centers (I know because my friend is one of them) instead of a foreign one.

Good question. Try finding an IBM. IBM sold their pc division to Lenovo about 18 months ago.
Lenovo continues to make IBM engineered business class pcs. They are rugged and reliable.
Dell sells 2 lines, the lower cost less dependable home class line under the Dimension name and a higher cost more rugged business class under the Optiplex name.
Lenovo and Optiplex are in the same class; cost about the same; perform about the same. Dimensions are made to meet low cost and moderate performance standards.
IBM continues to make Windows servers and most people believe IBM Windows servers are more reliable and robust than Dell. IBM also sells the AS 40 and System 390 servers midrange and large servers but you are not likely interested in these.

Well, The only ibm i have ever used is about 5 years old. It works good, does everything I need, but sorta slower. I suggest checking out Dell or HP for your current computer needs. If you just need a simple home computer wal mart might be your best bet. IBM is kinda fading.

IBM doesn't make PCs anymore. The IBM mainframes are better than Dell's largest servers, if you have the money and staff to own and operate one.
