Any pollution can cause change.

One part cyanide in ten million parts water will affect fish and its more common than you might imagine.

In places trout have changed gender because of the hormones in contraceptive pills.

Oily materials floating on the surface stop surface breathing creatures from breathing, that includes mosquito lava so not always a bad thing.

BUT, take away those bugs and the animals that feed off them have a harder job finding food. The food they do find will also have the oily materials in them. That can do anything from kill or affect the fetility of the larger animal/fish.

Detergents used to cause all sorts of problems with algae growth but that's controlled in many areas.

And don't think those lovely clean streams you see in pine forests are pollution free either. The acid pine needles leeches aluminum from the soil and then gets washed in to the stream. It then acts as a 'floculant', making the solids drop to the bottom of the stream.....giving clear (but mostly dead) water

There are rivers in the US where is was dangerous to touch (yes touch). That's rare now.

Pollution is still bad in many places but we rarely see the success stories....and there are many.

The damage is no living things for decades.

The main reasons for this is due to high density of population living in Delhi, the dumping of untreated water and solid waste into it (mostly illegally), the lax attitude of the government and mismanagement of projects focused at cleaning it. Also the water in this river remains stagnant for almost 9 months in a year aggravating the situation. Delhi alone contributes around 3,296 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage in the river.
