I woke up this morning and went to get my 8 month old son, when I found small MOUSE droppings in his crib near his mouth. Immediately, I called poison control to see what I should do in this situation, where they simply told me to give him a bath and wash his sheets with soap and water. Being the biggest germ freak I know, I don't believe some soap is all it takes to kill hantavirus, among the other disgusting diseases mice carry. My first question is why, since I never leave food out and my house is not filthy by any means, do I have a mouse after my baby boy; and how would any of you handle this situation in terms of how to clean/sterilize his toys/bedding/the rest of the house? I've already contacted Orkin and they're coming by at noon, and there has been no evidence of a rodent problem (droppings) until now. Helpful answers highly appreciated.

Mice are scavengers regardless to weather or not you leave food out they like to come in and get in to your cabinets. Just throw everything in the wash with hot water if it makes you feel better wash everything twice put out some mouse traps and that should do the trick absolute worse case call and exterminator they will get rid of all the little buggers or you can invest in a cat my cat always makes sure the house is mouse free. ~` Best of luck!!!

You don't have to have a dirty house to get mice. All it takes is a little opening somewhere or to leave a door open while unloading groceries, for instance. The reason the mouse found it's way to the crib is probably due to milk from the bottle on the sheets or on the baby's clothes.. Take the bottle away from the crib, and wipe the babies face.At least until you catch the critter.Don't freak out about a few mouse turds.Your child will grow up to eat dirt, spiders, rolypoly's etc. and will survive it all.Hamster and mice and rabbits that poop are part of childhood pets. Children are amazingly resilient! I'm sure Orkin will take care of the problem quickly for you.

Your house doesn't have to be dirty for you to get mice. I'm sure the poison control know what they're talking about. Wash his sheets two or three times if it makes you feel better. After pest control comes maybe you should set up some mouse traps unless any other creatures come in. Make sure it's out of reach from the baby though.

Over here we have something called Milton. It is a sterlising fluid used for babies bottles. Make up a solution of that (or what every your equalivant is) and spray and wipe on hard surface areas, including toys.

For soft toys, they have to go through the wash, as does bedding.

This really is no reflection on you, a mouse can get in through a hole the size of a pencil.

You did all the right things...and the poster previous were right, you don't have to have food about for them to come in. We used to get field mice in every spring.

Use Orkin and get a cat or 2, they will not come in with a cat in the home.

Hot water with Lysol cleaner. Then... caulk the holes where the rodents are coming in with a clear adheisve caulking. Keep the area clean and free from any food. If need be, add some traps too!! Good luck!!

If you use bleach in the laundry, it will kill just about any germ that exists. It is possible that the mice smell milk on his breath, and that's why they're coming around to his crib. Also, if you have any extremely furry stuffed animals in his room, they might be trying to "harvest" the fur to make nests for themselves.

I was told once that children/infants cant get hantivirus because you have to have a complete immune system to get it.
Mice will enter a clean house just like they will a dirty one. It is probably just a one time deal. Just wash everything real good and spray lysol on everything. Your son should be fine

The rodent isn't after your baby boy...plain and simple. Mice happen sometimes, even field mice can come in...if its too wet out they come in for warmth & dry...if its to dry out they come in for h2o and coolness. Same with bugs. It happens, it just so happened to march across your childs bed...lol. Likelihood of him catching anything is slim to none. But keep an eye on him anyway and keep this moment in mind should he become sick.

Get a cat. I know it sounds like a cliche but they really do get rid of mice plus then you also have a pet for your son to love and learn to respect animals (and by having a pet, his odds of getting allergies later are reduced).

Good luck-don't worry, I know you are freaked out but I am certian your wee one is fine.
