Help! Each time i'm away, my dear husband (bless him) surprises me with a clean house and a pile of clean laundry, but all in the same colour! He's washed colours together and they've run. Any tips on how to restore/filter out unwanted colours from washing, please? the pile keeps growing. I'm thinking of putting a lock to the washing machine (as a deterant...:)

A couple of hints. To prevent this from happening, set the dyes by adding a cup of white vinegar when you wash garments the first time. That way when hubby washes them, the dye won't bleed. Shout and Carbona both make dye grabber sheets that you can add in the wash water that collect excess dyes that bleed off of the garments right while they are in the wash. After it has already ocurred, you can use Rit or Carbona Color Run Removers, but sometimes you have to leave the garments soak in the solution for a while. Be sure to re-launder the garments after treating with the run removers, they have a rather strong odor.

There are colour removers and whites restorers for sale in all the supermarkets. Whether the colour removers would work once the clothes have been dried, I'm not sure, they should say on the packet. I'm always moaning that my husband doesn't do the washing but having heard your story I don't think I will in future! If I were you I would invest in a padlock or at least give him a crash course in laundry, probably save you money in the long run. Oh bless him, he's trying to do his best isn't he!

If the items have been run in the dryer, then 99% will be "set".
If they are pre-dryer stage, you just seperate and place back in the washer and apply some color-safe bleach in the water and keep doing it until the colors & whites are stabilized again. Whites, if washed by themselves, can do some bleach and hot water should help. Colors-just color safe bleach alternative.

If items have been dried, then you can try the above suggestion and not place any items into the dryer until you are certain that the colors have stabilized. Other than that, I would suggest going to a dry cleaners and seeing if they can assist you.

A lock would help, but it would discourage your hubby from future love-helps from him. I suggest that you fix a nicely worded sign with cute pictures of "how to do laundry" of the different steps, different chemicals used, when, and how to seperate the clothing types, and dryer settings.

Don't embarrase him. Just softly tell him you love him and the clothes will "last longer" if he goes the route you write up for him (or something like that...).

Good luck - you have a diamond in the rough hubby there. He's a gem that merely needs a little direction!

Hi if you are in the uk then there is a product available from supermarkets called colour run, it is a tissue you put in the wash that it works a treat by getting all the run colours to migrate to the tissue however it works best when you first discover the problem and the clothes are still wet. Best get a stock of it for next time!!!

I have been able to correct this problem before by applying Tide liquid detergent...not with bleach... to the stain. I always keep some in a little squeeze bottle to put on stains. I put it on and let it set for a day or two. Sometimes just a few hours. You could do this if their are large patches of the stain. If the whole garment is colored by the bleeding of other colors you could try soaking in the washer with a lot of Tide in the water. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. In my opinion Tide liquid is the best out there.

there is a product called ColourRun or try Ace bleach. Does not actually turn clothes white but removes stains. Both from supermarkets.

I have been successful with some clothing in this situation. Wash them at a hotter temperature if safe to do so.

There's a product made by Shout, it's a sheet that's added to the wash and it catches any loose dyes.... Get that for your husband, he's trying. Maybe a sorting lesson would help him get it right... Or just let him wash his own stuff.. Keep your stuff out of the hamper/ or do your laundry before you leave... My husband washes his own work clothes and towels.. I wash everything else..

Funnily enough this happened to me this weekend, i tried colour run when the clothes came out of the wash but it didn't work so took idiot to the shops where i bought the clothes and made him buy me new ones. £45 later he promised not to put any clothes in the wash without checking the label or with me first.
