i have two hdd installed and one has two partition(C: & D:) another one one partition only with around 300GB (E:). most of the data are movies and music files..the free space left is around 170GB. at one time it got unformatted by itself after i did a quick format on my new external hdd...i don know why it happened...

my E: which was one partittion became two parts...one part is unformatted (the used disk space part) and another part is unallocated part(free space part which is 170GB)...

any idea about this problem??????

Um..your question is very confusing but I think you want all the unallocated space to be partitioned. Go and backup everything to an external drive then use bootdisk.com to create a Win98 boot disk. Load the Win98 boot disk floppy or bootable CD in your drive and boot to it. Then, go to fdisk and partition all the drive either into one or however many partitions you want by selecting how much of the drive into each partition you desire. Then format each partition and you're good to install your OS and music/media. Good luck!

Apparently when you "quick formatted" the one drive, it affected the E drive, cause it to lose its formatting. It think it has two paritions on the E drive. The computer still sees some of the original format information, so it thinks that parts of the E drive is a partition waiting to be formatting. It has nothing pointing to the rest of the E drive, so it thinks that is unallocated space (no partition was ever set up on it).

If you have a file recovery software, it may be able to recover the original partition and files on the E drive. Apparently the information is still there (which is why Windows thinks part of it is an unformated partition).

Otherwise, use the Disk Manager in Windows to recreate a parition on the disk that held the E drive. Create the partition to use the whole drive if you want. Then format it (NTFS). After that you will be back in business with an empty E drive ready for usage.

In the future, if you decide to do any formatting or partitioning on the other hard drive, it is recommended that you disconnect to second hard drive forst to prevent accidently damage to it. (With the PC turned off, unplug the two cables that go into the back of the hard drive).
