The Dodgers are about middle of the pack in most offensive categories with the exception of homeruns and slugging where they are near the bottom in MLB. If you had to put a finger on it, I don't believe he had a good relationship with the players. He was always difficult to get along with as a player and I believe the dodgers felt they needed to make a move at this time.

For PR reasons. The Dodgers are 0.5 games out of first *gasp* and weren't scoring a ton of runs. The fans got pissed off, management wanted to make it look like they're fixing the problem, so they fire Eddie Murray. Firing managers is always the scapegoat solution for the suits running a team. It's certainly not that the suits made a mistake putting the team together, so it must be the coaches. I'm sure the Dodgers' upper management knows more about hitting than a switch hitter who has over 3,000 hits and 500 home runs.

The above posters have some good reasons but I also heard that he was unwilling or unable to communicate well with the players on the team. As a coach if you can't communicate what needs to be done to improve you're pretty much worthless. Supposedly he had the same problem in Cleveland where he was the hitting coach before he went to LA.

The Dodgers were not hitting and scoring a ton of runs. It's easier to fire the hitting coach than to get rid of the players who were not hitting. I think their lack of clutch hitting was the biggest problem.
