Can you just accept the first compulsive thought (or intermittent, random thoughts), and let it be without creating another one to follow it?

Perhaps the best way I could put it, is that the chain is not "formed," it is there, so, we don't "create" another to follow. The mind is multi-dimensional--it picks up on little links of memories, associations, metaphors, symbols. Some people "catch" the links more than others. Have you ever known someone who is talking with a specific train of thought, & seems to ramble? All the "layers" are overlapping, & sometimes at such a pace it's almost impossible to focus. This is a fascinating journey of many paths. This is also the way we gain insights.

Because one thought has implications to another. But, sure you can have one thought without creating another. If that original thought is your final say on the matter with no other circumstance that would change your mind or another possibility that presents itself after that. Usually these are small things. Do you keeping thinking about your choice of breakfast on one given day the rest of your life?

I have been accused of being too nice. This usually happens when I let a minor slight go. This used to bother me until I saw that the people who said I was too nice would always back down even when a great slight was made against them. There is no such thing as too anything unless it results in an undesired effect. If you feel good, then it was not too much beer. If you are enjoying thinking, it is not too much. If, however, you find yourself thinking about things you do not want to think about or if you find yourself thinking about things which are stressing you out it is still not thinking too much, it is just thinking about the wrong things.

What causes what you stated ? . . . The mere fact of being Human causes thought to ' chain ' out and create other thoughts to follow.

A second thought for the reason . . .For the sake of reassurance or verifying the first thought.

Or...like " Junto America " said in his reply above mine here. That...and merely the fact of being Human.

See...I'm already creating a ' chain ' of thoughts.

The brain is composed of neurons which are connected to each other by a web in complex ways. Neurons communicate with each other by releasing and absorbing ions. Because everthing is packed so tightly, sometimes the ions get lost and activate random neurons. More creative people tend to have more of the neuron "accidents".

An active alert mind. We cannot stop at one thought only but can discontinue it by diverting attention to another line of thought.

Beliefs about self and the world - our fears and attachments control and maintain the circularity of thought until we know what they are.

Meditation is one process for mastering the thought patterns; becoming aware of them and relinquishing them.
