The only ones I can think of right now are Capello, Trappatoni, Cruyff and Rijkaard- all great internationals, all European Cup Winners and league champions as managers. Greats like Platini and Beckenbauer did not manage clubs which is very different from managing the national team and harder over a longer period of time. Clough was an awesome striker before injury but not as an international. Keane, Van Basten, Hughes, Klinsmann etc haven't won anything of international note so can't be included yet.

Roy Keane. Worldclass player, only been at it one season but he will be Worldclass.

Mario Zagallo, won the World Cup playing, won it managing.

Beckenbauer - Der Kaiser. Certainly Worldclass, one of the top players ever and a great manager. Captained and managed a World Cup winning team.

Johan Cruyff. 2nd or 3rd best player of all time - a great manager wsithout question.

I think you will find they are many out there.

How do you define a world class manager? There are managers in big jobs that were world class players:

Frank Rijkard
Dunga
Marco Van Basten
Ronald Koeman

Also doing good things in management are the likes of Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, Steve Coppell and Gareth Southgate

I thinks being a worldclass manager is more down to good understanding of the game and a good tactile mind, eg Jose Morinio(can't spell it) never played the game but is considered one of the best managers in the world.

Brian Clough was a world class player as well as being the greatest manager in the history of the game. He was a very highly regarded centre forward for among other teams, Sunderland. His playing career was cut short by injury but who knows how far he could have gone if fully fit.

Yes they can be .... i'd say Roy Keane has shown all the signs that he will be a top manager ... In general players with shrude attitude and a winning mentality would have a good chance of making a top manager and ofcourse working under top managers would help them too.

Sir Alex is never a world class player. Good in the brain, but can't execute. Here are the names of players who are World Class and become World Class managers:-

1. Dunga (Bra / Brazil National Team)
2. Johan Cruijff (Hol / Unemployed)
3. Dino Zoff (Ita / Unemployed)
4. Zico (Bra / Fenerbahçe)

Yes of course, look at Roy Keane. He took a team at the bottom of the championship and ended up winning the title.
That is world class management, ans being his first year that makes it even more brilliant.
They were probably just too scared of him not to do the best they could. LOL
