I am a 22 year old female who has a 4 year old son. I am in a relationship now, and my fiance is not my sons father. We have not been using any form of birth control for 2 years, and have not been careful, even tried getting pregnant for a few months, but nothing. What can cause infertility in men, or women after they have already had a child?

My fiance and I do not have any std's, and I didnt have any major complications with my sons delivery. I ovulate regularly as well.

You may have "secondary infertility", but most likely it's your partner. Did you have any complications with the delivery of your first? Do you or your partner have an STD? That can affect things.

Low sperm count, or low-quality sperm (deformed like short or long tails, curled tails, small or large heads, two tails, etc) can affect the man's fertility.

Also, you could possibly be having an allergic reaction to his sperm where you're body is trying to fight them off. It's rare, but does happen.

If you're really concerned, or get to that point, then I suggest a full fertility work up for both of you.

many things
1st and foremost check the count & mobility of his sperm
2nd...are you ovulating regularly.
if thats determined to be ok...then its the post colietal (sp?) test, where you have sex that a.m and go straight to the dr. they do a culture to see how many little guys are still swimming compared to the # that have killed over...checking to see if your body is fighting his little guys
If all looks good they may check your tubes to see if they're still open, not to mention blood work for the proper hormone levels at any given time during your cycle.
and it can go on from there and doesn't get any better.

Infertility diagnosis & treatment is expensive and agonizing.
After two years and no success I gave up...spent 14 years trying to conceive. I walked away feeling like a human pin cushion and violated...since everyone and their brother had been up in my hoohoo looking around with all kinds of instruments, including surgery. I didn't have a pap smear for 3 years after that, quite frankly I didn't want anyone or anything up in there....lol.

Gave up when the doctors just flat out told me it wasn't possible and that I should have a hystorectomy at 34!!! I just refused to give up my female parts...whether working or not they weren't deadly to me at the moment and even if they became cancerous (which women who haven't had children show better chances of developing certain types of cancer-so they say) it didn't matter because I didn't have a child that needed me to live for. Then the right man came along and knocked me up @ 36! Doctors, what do they know...they're human and make mistakes...Thank goodness I never listened to them!!! Baby girl going on 4 months old.

The most common cause of infertility is a hidden infection.
