The dot com designation on a web site indicates a for profit company thus .com = the (com) in company. The dot org is for non-profit organizations thus the .org for the (org) in organization. There are also special subscripts for websites from foriegn countries like .uk for United Kingdom, .jal for Japan, and .mx for Mexico. There are also special post scripts like https: means the site is a secure site as opposed to http: which is not secure.

Also, dot org (as well as dot edu, dot net, and dot gov) are more reliable with information because they are not trying to sell anything if you will.
Dot Com is mostly composed of commercial business.
Usually, if you are looking for true information and doing reports and such, you would use a dot org, edu, gov, or net.
That's as much as I know.

There are several extensions. Originally the com extension was for companies and org was for organizations and edu was for schools and gov was for governments. While edu and gov is still for schools and government respectively, the org extension is now used for corporations as well. Often a company, called xyz may want a web site www.xyz.com and find it is taken - then they look for www.xyz.org and find it available so they use it.

Well, .com is usually put after a company domain name. For example, if you put www.google.com, google is a company, so they will have a .com, for company. However, an organization such as the World Wildlife Fedaration will have .org, for organization. It just makes searching for results easier. Like, if you want to find a good, educational site for horse lovers, you could go to www.google.com, and in the search text, look for horses. But with that anything could come up. So try this:
For educational info on horses type in this- horses+.edu
Doing this will give you only educational resources on horses. To buy a horse, try horses+.com
And for finding horse organizations, try horses+.org

****THIS WORKS FOR ANY SUBJECT****

I hope this helps!

Nowadays nothing.
"originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs. Now anyone can register a .org domain. .org was the domain commonly recommended for use by individuals, although .name and .info are now alternatives." form wikipedia
