As painful as that was to watch it was a great series. It deserves to be ranked with the best ones ever.

there is a bit of truth to that statement... the series goes 7 games and is won on a single in extra innings after a blown save in the 9th by the best closer in the league that year. Not to mention the Marlins were the first Wild Card team to ever win it. It's just how it works though, teams in big markets garner more attention.
I'm not saying it was the best series ever, but how many times have you seen Edgar Renteria's game winner in 1997 compared to Luis Gonzalez' game winner over the Yankees in 2001 when watching highlites of big sports moments... don't get me wrong... Logo's hit off Rivera was big and so was that series, but Edgar and the Marlins deserve a little more attention as far as history goes.

I think that serious baseball fans appreciate the greatness of the series, but I do understand his point when it comes to the lack of attention the series gets ten years later. I don't think any true fan dismisses that series anymore than they do the Braves-Twins in 1991 or other series not involving huge-market teams.
Generally, though, I do believe that we'd see more retrospectives about it if it had been a Subway Series. That's not a knock on anyone, it's just that the series would have been more meaningful to the average fan and to the biggest market in the country.

if the Mets and Yankees went to the series, it would be the greatest world series of all time for the fans in New York, and I'm sure it would be a big media thing and it would of gotten more attention than Cleveland and Florida, but I wouldn't characterize it as the greatest ever.

Yes and no. For fans of Florida and Cleveland, that is completely untrue. For fans of the Mets and Yankees, which do outnumber fans of Cleveland and Florida by a very large armount, that is certainly true. For the rest of us, it really doesn't matter either way.

what a joke! that was an amazing series! went all 7 games, and won in extra innings in dramatic fashion by single just over the glove of Charlie Nagy, what more could you ask for.

That is how the media would treat it yeah. The media loves New York and they love themselves. They think no one cares unless it is New York.
