I AM intelligent. I have several degrees (including some from other countries) and speak several languages.

America may be more "laid back" at work than what you would like, but it is why this country is successful, in a way

Actually Americans work very hard. Every immigrant and visitor I have ever known said this is the most stress they had ever known....

If Americans were as persnickety and particular as YOU then YOU could not come here.

We would be like nations who would not allow you to work here or visit for a very limited time.

You are willing to come here and make money, either through work or business, but you are not willing to help change what you feel is so wrong.

America has had a strong economy in the past, so it was not always necessary to have the same "standards" (which I personally feel can be extreme) in other countries.

Examples: handwritting analysis before hire, having a degree (I mean an Advanced Level 4 year degree) for HVAC or maid work, or having to take 50 tests before getting job...yes people do that in certain countries

You see, in other nations, work is not as plentiful (although it is not NEARLY as plentiful in the United States as when I was a child) so it is necessary to have "higher standards" (which again I think are just bogus "weed out" stuff) to get applicants.

Also, look at the work the people actually do....there are people in America who might be late everyday, but they do their jobs..maybe they don't have a gift on Bosses' Day, the way they would in say Japan, but they still respect him or her....

You do not know ALL AMERICANS so don't say what you know.

My entire family works very hard, working through lunches and breaks and overtime for free, whatever it takes to get the job done....

I don't know if the people you have encountered are actually lazy or incompetent or if you are just one of those people who have BS standards...

And I don't know where you are from to make a comparison...chances are I have lived there...I have lived on almost every continent on Earth (not Antarctica) and in most countries.

You should be more respectful and just worry about YOUR professionalism.

If you can't stand it then leave the job or the country.

I'am a American and I do agree with you the people in this country have gotten lazy and the service that you get any where you go is horrible, you go into a department store and all you hear is the fat lazy workers complaining about when their break is !! Break, break from what standing around so you can go stand around in a different place. The way this country has been run in the past 20 years has just destroyed our credibility with the rest of the world. The people here have just become complacent and don't care about anyone but themselves. It will only get worse soon there will only be 2 classes of people here the rich and the poor no middle this is a young country compared to the rest of the world and it took alot of country's many hundreds of years to be ruled by dictators and a government that is not for the people but just for the money it's coming no one will do anything to stop it because they have already begun to make those they want to control fat and stupid so the are the sheep that do as there told. being an American does not mean what it used too. It's very sad

First of all, have you been EVERYWHERE in America?

I think that you're making a sweeping generalization based on limited experience.

Are there lazy and incompetent workers in the US? Definately.

Are there more than in other countries? Probably about the same.

Compare the work environment between the US and France.
Work week: US - 40 hours / France - 35 hours
Vacation: US - generally starts at 2 weeks per year and increases with seniority / France - 5 weeks minimum by law

French quote from a CBS news story -

"Corinne Maier, a part-time employee for the state-owned electricity company, has written a book arguing that the French should work less or at least less well. "The aim is to keep your job without working," says Maier. "It's not to go higher!"

HMMMM Keep your job without working. A proud French citizen for sure.

You are choosing to only see the lazy, incompetent side. You are being narrow minded and short sighted. Most Americans are smart, competent, motivated people who have worked very hard for the lives they have.

American work place ethics have entered the age of ME. Meaning everyone is responsible for themselves. Once corporate America proved to be as dishonest as it is, the whole house of cards collapsed.
So if the owner of a company continues to hire all of his relatives and friends into important positions and give he and his executives bonuses that the company can't afford, why should a 10.00/hour clerk or a factory laborer give a chit about the company as well.
You go into survival mode, do as little as needed and screw the customer.

It is easy to forget the competent, smooth-running services we get from everyone. It sticks in our mind when we get frustrating, incompetent service.

I think it is just selective memory.
