How do people make those sign generators we see all over the internet?

I see "Sign Generators" for everything now. "Make your own Movie Marquee Sign" , "Make your own Freeway Sign" etc.

How are these things made? I notice the pages are usually written in PHP but is there some sort of tutorial or an example anywhere? I want to try and create my own.

PHP has built-in image manipulation functions.

These generator sites simply begin with a template / fonts, add what you ask for to the template, and send the resulting graphic to the screen.

Check the marquee command in HTML; that is how it is done
