Bachelor of Science: a bachelor's degree is a first degree, which normally takes 3-4 years to complete, so you graduate at 21-22 if you went straight from school; and it's in a scientific discipline to distinguish it from, for instance, Arts (BA) or Law (LLB) degrees. (Hons) means graduated with Honours. This should indicate a better quality of degree than a simple "Pass" degree, though many universities award honours to 95%+ of graduates. The level of honours achieved gives a better insight: First class honours (1) - extremely high standard Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) - High standard Lower Second Class Honours (2:2) - Good standard Third class honours (3) - only just honours grade (still no shame in that). You normally need a 2:1 or better to get a place on a PhD course.
