Best book every "Goodnight moon" by Margaret Wise Brown
One of the children I watched would run up to me and ask me to read Margaret Wise, he was only 22 months old. Sounded more like mawgawet mise, you get get the idea.
Also anything by Sandra Boynton, same child was finishing her sentences and the younger children would always bring this author to me before any Dora, Elmo, Disney book.
Try these all time favs by Sandra Boynton:
-The going to bed book *I find actions come easy and soothing in this one*
-Boo Maa La La La *too cute*
-The belly button book *then your child will know where his bee boo is!
-Blue hat green hat
-Guess how much I love you
-Barnyard dance
-Opposites
-Hippos go berserk
-Horns to toes and inbetween
These book are hard cover, brightly illustrated, clever, fun to read and even you wont get too sick of them.
I would say ages 6 mnths - 2 and a half will love them. But I know that even the 5 year olds I minded would ask for them!

Try to get her texture books or books that have sounds or are made of plastic that happens to be bath proof.
Bright colors & large shapes are also really good.
Robert munch is very popular!! As are the Calio book series.
But with the basic ideas of lots of color, large shapes and activities within the books--can't go wrong (ie. pop up books, that idea).

Curious George - either separate, or in one big volume. Worth the $, plus you can get a stuffed one, too!
But my favorite is PAULUS AND THE ACORNMEN. With a full page drawing / painting (!) every other page, it makes the perfect book to read at bedtime... for many bedtimes in a row.
