I call it purple. As purple and violet are two different colors. I spell it gray, but if I feel like it that day then I spell it grey. Very good question.

"Grey" is a variation of "gray" -- either spelling works, really. It all boils down to personal preference when it comes to usage. I go for "purple" 'cause it sounds more distinctive. Now that I think about it, people spell it both ways, but I usually say grey. Violet is more like a dark purple, I usually say purple.

In Standard American english, it's gray and purple. In British English, it's grey and violet. It's just different ways we say things, accents and stuff. We say color, they say colour. We say favorite, they say favourite. We say theater, they say theatre. Different stuff. And confusing as hell.
