According to Consumer Reports The Honda CR-V rates as one of the best along side the Subaru Forester as least likely to break down. The Jeep Cherokee is at the other end of that spectrum as one of the most likely. We got a new vehicle last year. Though we wanted to get a CR-V, we couldn't find a used one. We tried out just about all the mid size SUV's and settled on the Subaru Forester because the one we found had everything we would have ordered.
The Honda will by far exceed the Jeep's mileage. We tried out a Grand Cherokee and I really liked it . Great ride, great power, all the frills. I really liked the leather seats but it got about 16 to 18 MPG. The Honda should do about 28. That's what my Forester gets.
If you look at the used car lots you won't find any used Honda's but you will find hundreds of used Jeeps. If you don't believe me go to the Yahoo used vehicle page and look.
I'd go with the Honda

The Grand Cherokee is a lot nicer but it might not be as reliable as the CR-V. The Honda, however, will have an I-4 and will be just bare bones while the Jeep will be loaded, since it's a Limited. It might also have a V8, which is cool, but I don't know if you worry about mpg that much. If you do, you might want to get the CR-V. Good luck.

My wife drives a 2001 CR-V and loves it. We got it brand new. It has about 70,000 miles on it now and it gets about 30-32 mpg depending on driving conditions. We have not had to repair anything, just regular maintenance. Plus, Hondas hold their resale value for longer because of better quality. I'm not putting down jeep in any way, but, I have a few friends that own one and they have broken down a few times and they are also getting gas very often so not to good mileage.

Honda CRV. Is much better . They can be hard to find but are worth the extra effort. I work on a used car lot and we cannot keep them thru the weekend. I have had plenty of chances to compare the 2 and yes you get more bells and whistles with the jeep BUT in 4 years your honda will be worth much more at trade in. I see it all the time.

I have a 96 Grand Cherokee. I get about 14-15 MPG, not the greatest when gas is so expensive. It costs about $60 to fill up. As far as repairs, the only thing I have had to do is replace tires and brakes. I have had it for about 5 years too.
