What I usually do, unplug the modem, wait two minutes and then plug back in (Leave computer off while you do this) Fire up the comp and then call up internet explorer. If it doesnt work... Not sure. Must be something else. But yes my cable modem acts just like everything is fine but does need to be reset from time to time. A UPS with your surge protector will/may prevent this in the future.

Note: I have had to do what everyone has mentioned above me as well, so all are good advice regarding this issue.

Hi,

Try the following. Power the cable modem off and then on by removing the power cord. Keep the cord out for like 30 seconds and then reconnect.

If you are using XP, go into the Control Panel, then Network and Internet connections, and click on the network connections...in that window there should be an icon showing your connection to comcast or whatnot. Right click on that icon and select the "repair" option. It should take a few seconds and attempt to repair the connection...it should reset things.

If not, you may wish to try chatting with comcasts online help as they may have other options for you.

First reboot the cable modem by unplugging it for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Then reboot the PC.

If you have a router do the same thing.

If all that is normal, and you are still not getting the light to come on, change the cable running from your PC to the cable modem. If that doesn't do anything then it sounds like your network card is dead.

Click on Start, right click on "My Computer" and then click on Properties, Hardware, then click on Device Manager. Check your Network Adapters. If there is a yellow triangle next to any of them, right click on it and click on uninstall. Restart your PC and then follow the steps above to get back to the device manager. Click on scan for hardware changes. The PC will ask you if you want to reinstall the hardware. Click on yes. This should take care of your problem.

Assuming windows xp here....

Click on "my network places" then "view network connections".

Right click on your ethernet connection and select "repair".

If it is not an option or doesn't work, most likely your nic is fried.
