I have a friend that is about 22 weeks pregnant, has had and ultrasound, and they said that she's only having one baby. But, she's convinced she's having twins. She says that when the baby is moving she can feel the baby moving in more than one spot and it feels like two in there fighting for room. She's already had one baby before and she says this pregnancy feels so much different from any other. She thinks she's carrying twins but the doctor says no...Do you think they could miss the second baby in the ultrasound?

It's possible they could miss it, but not likely, especially after 20 weeks. A really early ultrasound, like 8 or 9 weeks might miss a twin, but not a later one, where the tech might not see the entire second baby but would at least see some of its parts.

Also, they would hear a second heartbeat.

What your friend might be feeling is different parts of the baby moving, like maybe the head on one side of her belly and legs on the other. With all three of my pregnancies I've felt stuff all over the place!

Hope your friend finds out soon. That would be exciting!

It is very extremely rare, but possible. The doctor is still human and the technology they use can be precise but still depends on how they read. Now, if you put the volume up during the ultrasound, usually they count how many heartbeats they hear. The odds of them being wrong are too low and she is most likely only having one. It also can depend on the position of the baby, mine was always all over the place and hit me everywhere. All pregnancies are different too!

I really doubt it. Pregnancies are often very different from each other, even with the same mother. I'm on my third pregnancy, and haven't had the same symptoms in any two pregnancies. Feeling the baby all over doesn't mean that she's having twins. The baby I'm carrying now is much stronger, and hits/kicks harder than his sisters... maybe that's what your friend is experiencing...

I don't believe that the doctor would miss such a big thing. The ultrasound machines these days are much sharper then the ones of the past, and not to mention, the doctor most likly checks the hearbeat on a fetal monitor at each visit, and the hearts wouldn't beat in unision. I am currently 33 weeks pregnant with my second child.

I would very much doubt they could miss a 2nd baby after the 2nd scan. She should have had antenatal appointments by now as well, where her stomach would have been felt to check size and also she would have heard the heartbeat making it even more unlikely they have missed another baby. after the 1st scan when the baby's are very small there is more chance of them missing a 2nd baby. You can feel movements in different places at the same time with one baby, i did with both my pregnancy's, and each pregnancy is completely different to the previous one(s).

It is possible but very unlikely

I've heard of doctor's missing a 2nd heartbeat but not missing a second baby in an ultrasound. It may be very remotely possible, but I doubt it. Your friend may just have a very active baby. My 2nd one danced and stretched so actively I couldn't sleep some nights (she grew up loving tap and ballet!).

Sometimes 1 twin will hide the other--its been known to happen.

A friend of mine is a triplet & her mom was told she was having twins, b/c the 2 were "hiding" the 3rd who was much smaller.

As well, another possibility is that she is having more gas with this pregnancy--gross true? But its possible. So instead of feeling fetal movement, she's feeling (& not realizing it) gas.

It can happen. Sometimes one baby is in the way and you can't see the other one. They can even miss the heartbeat. If the hearts are beating together then you can only hear one or if they find one then they don't bother looking for another one. It is possible. Good luck.

Go to images.google.com, and search for "22 week ultrasound."

The answer should be clear to _you_, never mind an experienced ultrasound tech.

Fetal movement does feel weird, but that's a bit too wishful in the wishful thinking department.
