Asking here is a good place to start.. There are several beginner books which contain chords you can easily teach yourself with these.
You should also look at read guitar tabs, do a search. If you learn with tabs you can learn songs and take it from there.
As with anything else, just be patient, give it time and you'll figure it out.
good luck

Firstly, do you want to play electric or acoustic? Acoustic is more difficult to play initially (just 'cos the strings are harder to press down) but you don't have to buy any other kit apart from the guitar. If you want to play electric you'll need an amp of some kind and a cable to connect your guitar to it. You can get a traditional amp or something like a Line 6 pod, which digitally models amps and effects. The advantage of something like the Line 6 is you can set the volume quite low without losing tone. A traditional amp really needs to be turned up to sound great. You can also get amp modelling programs, like Guitar Rig, that will install on your pc, but that way leads to the considerably more involved and expensive task of home studio building. It's fun but damn expensive!
Choosing a guitar can be a bit of a fraught process. I'd recommend going to a guitar shop and trying a few. Research helps, so if you want to just play metal, choose something like a BC Rich. Something like a Fender Strat or Gibson SG will give you more varied tone, but in completely different ways. A good guitar book will help you here.
Also a good guitar book or guitar lessons will really help you start to play, 'cos it can be a bit confusing otherwise. There are still lots of guitar tabs for various songs on the internet too. And there's also a program called Guitar Pro that's very useful for learning songs. Still, there's nothing quite like just picking the thing up and playing it! It tends to be fun even if you're not entirely sure what you're doing.
Essentially you need to make sure you're getting your technique right. But other than that it's all just practice and fiddling! So patience is essential!

If you can, borrow a guitar from a friend - an inexpensive one, but one in good condition that plays well. You could also rent one, or rent to own. If you buy one get one used and have an experienced guitar player buddy of yours help you pick it out. It helps to take a few lessons to get you started, and if you want to eventually master the guitar then take classical guitar lessons and be sure to get a QUALIFIED teacher - like someone with a degree in music education. Not all teachers are the same, so try different teachers and find one that you like. You can learn how to play the guitar the easy way in a very short period of time, but the more you learn the better you can be at it. There are free lesson sites on the Internet, lots of books, CDs and DVDs, but a real qualified teacher can watch your hands and tell you whether or not your technique is good or bad. Start hanging around with other guitar players and ask a million questions. Listen to the great guitar players and try to figure out what they are doing - watch their hands if its a video. Good luck on your journey. Maybe we can jam together someday.

Well besides, buying a guitar (and I recommend an acoustic because it is easier to play an electric after but not the other way around), I bought a DVD. I am a visual learner. You might want to consider lessons.

I started with a cheap classical style guitar. They sound nice, have a larger fretboard and are easier on the fingers of beginners. Then take lessons at a local instrument shop, or if you have a neighbor that knows how to play and is willing to teach.
