Why?...That's where some people go to be 'sociable' and to hang out with friends....Some people go there to get drunk and their really not interested in being sociable. It just depends on the person. Not everyone who drinks is a 'loner'

It depends. I once went into a pub with my brother for just a few quiet drinks and this absolutely steaming bloke came and sat with us and started being really loud and chatty which was fine but when we did not reciprocate his loud, chatty behaviour he started calling us boring and even being a bit aggresive as in his drunken state he thought we were looking down on him. That really annoyed me. It was as if we were obliged to socialise with him.
If a person was just friendly and tactful and not in your face I would appreciate that and be friendly back.
I mean how else do you meet people? Some people are loners by no choice of their own. They may have just moved to the area and be looking to meet people.
Maybe they are loners but at least they are doing something about it and that should be respected.
In summary, it depends on their approach and attitude.

Depends on the person really - if it were an old man I wouldn't see anything wrong with it - I would just see him as lonely and looking for someone to talk to. If it were someone young though - say in their 20's or 30's yes I would think they were a bit sad and pathetic. And I would feel uncomfortable speaking with someone who has come to the pub on their own. Meeting new friends in the pub whilst on your own is not a good way to make new friends. A pub is a place for people to go with their friends. If a person has come to the pub with their friends however and starts chatting I wouldn't see that has strange or uncomfortable unless they were strange!

No! Why would I? A pub is a place for social gatherings so I expect people to be sociable!

I thought that was what pubs are for.
I guess it depends what they're talking about. If they were talking about problems they were having in C++, or their obsession with John Tickle from big brother/Brainiacs, then yes, it would be a bit sad.

No. Just friendly and sociable!
Thinking someone is sad for trying to be friendly is sad in itself!
