The Star Spangled Banner is a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814.

The tune to the Star Spangled Banner is The Anacreontic Song, also known as "To Anacreon in Heaven", which was a popular British drinking song written in the mid-1760's by John Stafford Smith.

The lyric originally was written as a poem by Francis Scott Key who was writing about the British shelling of Fort McHenry. He was a lawyer and an amateur poet. He was there at the time and wrote about the flag always flying during the battle, showing that we were undefeated.

The tune is actually an old drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven." Since the words and the music fit, people started singing it together. It was recognized as a patriotic song for many years, but wasn't made the official National Anthem of our country until 1931 by an act of congress.

There are actually four verses, and they tell the story very well. The Anthem we sing usually only includes the first verse.

If you mean the national anthem, the words to The Star-Spangled Banner were written by Francis Scott Key. It was set to the tune of a British drinking song called the Anacreontic Song, and became a popular patriotic song before it becames the official National Anthem by an act of congress in 1931.

Francis Scott Key wrote the words while on a British ship as it was attacking our American fort. He was so proud that the fort withstood the onslaught, he had to write a poem about it.

The music, however, was the tune to a drinking song. No one really knows how it was written or who wrote it, but people just decided to put the words with the music since it fit so well, turned into congress, and thus we have our national anthem.
