Specifically, I feel that homework is a massive downer on a child/teen/student and decreases happiness due to taking away personal time outside of educational institutes. When going out or having fun, it is always resting on ones mind and in general is stressful. My question is, do you feel that is homework was abolished, would people do better in education and in general feel happier?

Note: I am not a young-un. I have thought about this a lot, and while I believe that homework has its merits, I think it is psychically draining. Whoever mentioned teachers feeling like they HAVE to give homework is on the mark. Sometimes it's very unnessecary

Homework can be a great tool in the learning process when used correctly. Homework is meant to provide an opportunity to practice skills learned in class, or (in the case of older students) introduce material that will be covered in depth in class. I think the current problem with homework is that teachers (and parents) feel like homework SHOULD be assigned. So, even if there's nothing to practice, review, or introduce, teachers feel pressured to assign homework. Which leaves the student with, in essence, Busy Work. That kind of homework is stressful and ineffective, in my opinion. However, I do not think abolishing homework would improve the educational system. Homework provides a great opportunity for learning to extend beyond the classroom and increases retention of information and automaticity of skills being practiced.
The key is that homework shouldn't be used as a punishment or for Busy Work. It should be used a tool for students.

Homework is stupid. It's bad enough kids have to spend 6 - 12 hours a day in those brainwashing institutions and then the dorks that propose to teach them something want to give them extra work to do so the kids have even less of a life.
Yes, I agree and would take it one step further by abolishing public education altogether. Homeschool the kids and let them enjoy life. You could have get-togethers that are more peaceful and fun and I'd be willing to bet crime rates would drop because the socialization would be on a better level. There wouldn't be school shootings, no bullying and the list goes on.
Now watch me get a lot of thumbs down, LOL... I don't care, I got 2 more points!

Homework has a purpose, like others have said, to reinforce skills and lessons. I have worked in schools and have noticed that many students would not have homework, if they did their work in class, but they are too busy socializing. The result being, work must be taken home.
I was raised by two teachers, and growing up it was put to me that school work was my JOB. Starting in grade 4 all us kids (4) had what was called "study hour". At 4 every afternoon we all went to our rooms for 1 hour to do homework, read a book or do something quiet. I realize now it also gave my mother the opportunity to start supper in peace. Until high school, when homework became a couple hours work, we never had a problem getting our school work completed in that hour. I do not remember being stressed or unhappy as I knew at 4 o'clock my homework would get done. It also taught us self disipline.
Homework also gives parents an idea of what their child is learning. I think if parents got more involved with their children's homework, all would benefit.
If you set aside a certain period of time everyday just for homework, there is no stress involved. Take a break after school for an hour or two, do your homework and your evening is yours to unwind.
You are being prepared for the real world, and a real work day is not 5 hours long with a lunch break. Buck up.

Okay, I'm going to revise my post, since you added some new information to your post. You said that your Internet typing and your school typing is not the same. Why do you choose not to practice correct English when typing on the Internet? I'm fine with acronyms, but you really should be practicing correct English, especially if you're going to be writing essays for school. Still, I stand by what I said about your boyfriend. When you turn in somebody else's work as your own, that is called academic dishonesty. If the teacher ever finds out about it, he can fail the class in college. Emphasize to him the importance of writing his own work. If he's worried about getting a "C" on that essay, because of the quality of the work, remind him that it could be an "F" for the entire class, if he continues to try to take short-cuts like that. Also, when you're in high school, the number of classes that you take is mandated by the local board of education. However, when you're in college, you can take as few of classes as you want. So if he's feeling overloaded with homework, tell him to either drop a class or take fewer courses next semester. As far as whether or not you should drop your boyfriend, that is entirely your decision. You should ask yourself an important question, though: Do you want to be with somebody that makes you unhappy? It's okay to have a stupid argument every now and then, if most of the time it's great, but you don't want to stick around somebody who is a perpetual downer, either.

Absolutely not. I am a sophomore in High School, and even I don't think so. I think that homework helps us try to work in other environments than the classroom, and it helps us remember the things we have learned that day. Example: During 1st hour Spanish, I would always get homework. I was glad because a. it's a foreign language to me, and b. since it was so early in the morning, I would probably forgtet most of the material I had learned the day before had it not been for the homework.

I believe that many people would be happier in the short term. But once they have to face this ever-changing and rough world, they would not have developed the habit of studying, analyzing, and finding solutions to problems. In addition, they would probably not be good workers, since all professions require work outside of the office or laboratory. The workday never ends when one walks out of the building. Consequently, homework is preparation for the way one is going to get ahead in life.

It seems every one of you young'uns think this way, from what I have heard over the years.
School work is hard, aye, but when you leave school, you will find life is harder. Homework serves to help you later in life in at a good job and respectable position in society.
It is really simple - if you want to live an enjoyable life when you are older, work as much as you can and serve to increase your knowledge; it makes all the more importance when you are not ignorant and stupid.
If you don't like homework, then don't finish it. Find that when you are 15, you're living on the streets homeless, addicted to harsh drugs, drinking a case of cheap wine every day and complaining every day to strangers passing about who could have stuffed you over.

Homework is good. besides homework, you should actually go the extra mile by practising past-year exam qns if u r takin a national examination. Doing homework isnt enough,u gonna just scrap through ur exams if u hav the mentality that homwork is bad. You should learn to manage ur time if u havent done so. Then, homework wouldnt be a torture to u.

NO! Homework is designed to reinforce those skills that are taught in the classroom. If homework were abolished, American students would fall even further behind in the world than they are now.
