5 days ago I tripped over a bucket & hurt my left foot. It is still stiff, it throbs, it gets swollen each day, and I take Ibrubofen to help it although the Ibrubofen doesn't seem to do much. There is no discolouration. The pain is on the left hand side above the ball of my foot. Unfortunately I have to work and my work involves 8 hours each day on my feet serving customers and filling shelves.
My question is: as I am on my feet each day can this damage the foot any further or does it just mean it will take longer to get better?
When I prop up my leg high, low or wherever, it makes no difference to the throbbing.

Standing on your foot is going to make the recovery prolonged.

You can however ease some of the pain and speed the healing by apply Arnica gel or ointment to the affected area.

Arnica is available from good health food stores.
Don't buy the cream formulation...it isn't strong enough to help you.

Good luck

It is strange the things people on the net cause my mind to remember. Try Epsom salt and hot water, as hot as you can stand. Soak your foot several times while not working. On the job if you can wrap the foot in an ace bandage, fairly tight. Don't stop the blood from flowing but tight enough to keep it turning or bending. For years you will have to protect it, this will happen again. Just watch it.

Obviously being on your feet all day isn't going to promote the sprain healing any faster, but its unlikely to lead to any lasting damage. It would be a good idea to at least get an ace wrap from your local pharmacy to put a little compressive wrap around it to help keep swelling down. Putting ice on it when possible, and keeping your foot elevated while resting will also help keep swelling down.
