I am 16 and will probably take a summer job working at a fast food restaurant. What working conditions can I expect? What are certain things will I be expected to do there? I'm thinking I don't like the idea of taking food orders from customers. Will I have to do that, or are there other things to do, besides that? And if I do take orders will I have to prepare the food in the kitchen or does someone else do it?

Where I worked, anyway: they put MOST young ladies out front on the cash register & MOST young men cooking the food.

They also expect you to get an order out in a certain amount of time, say 2 minutes per order. And when you are not busy, it's your JOB to look busy!!! Although, there aren't many times that happens. As you sweep & mop the floors, wash down all the countertops, clean tables, wash windows, take trash out, & clean restrooms. You also wash down trays.

If you do deal with customers, simply remember one thing; how would you like to be treated IF you were the customer??

The hardest thing, at least for me; is when a customer would come back to complain about the food & I got all the crap....... when I didn't have anything to do with cooking it.

And yes, there will be times when you mess up an order here or there........ with 2 minutes per order, how could anyone be perfect??? Also, don't let anyone else use your "drawer"..... as the manager counts it at the end of the day. After all, if YOU mess up & get blamed for it....... it is one thing. But if someone else messes up & is using your drawer, you still get blamed for it.

Just a few quick tips!!!

you can take orders or make the food in the back. Probably not at the same time though, but either way you are on your feet the entire time. Work conditions can be hot and sticky and depending on the fast food restaurant you may have to be very efficient.

They may have you cook foods, empy waste, clean bathrooms, clean floors, work drive through, take orders. Never know, you do what they need and will be trained on it all at one time or another, thats the business. Why not do something else like work at a tanner, clothing store, ice cream shop, deliver newspapers, watch children for the summer, lifeguard, be a camp counsler.

Sweety you just have to take the orders if you are working as a waiter.
Do not worry about cooking,it is done by the Chef of the restaurant.
Maybe....sometimes you may also get some scoldings from the customers or Chef if they are rude and mean but don't worry, work by heart.
WISH YOU GOOD LUCK !!

sometimes it is boring, sometimes busy, sometimes fun.

at MOST fast food restaurants, the order takers (cashiers) may gather up the food, but they don't cook it.

it varies some by company. When you apply, you can tell them if you want to be a cook or cashier.

who is involved in cleaning up and counting money at the end of the day also varies some.

Working fast food is like war....periods of extreme boredom punctuated by absolute chaos. You will likely be cooking first. Then you might "graduate" to the front line where the registers are. The registers are "idiot proof" there are special keys for all the food on the menu. It is often hot in that kitchen. You leave work reeking of hot grease....fish...fries...burgers...whatever. But it is a very good experience. I think you will do well.....smiling

As a former manager, I say, All of the above + more. Clean tables, bathrooms, floors, etc. In other words, anything that needs to be done.
