I have a Z3, and you're okay!

You need to know that if you think it's about to rain, put the top up, but the windows go up next (after the top is up). You don't put the top up with the windows already up. You can put the windows down about 1/4 inch, then put the top up, then raise the windows up all the way.

If it's raining, and you get into your car... open the door and get in, then lower the window about 1/4 inch and raise it again. (This is in your Z3 manual).

Also, never take your car through a car wash. Your top is canvas (not rubber like the later model BMW's) and it will loose its sealant.

There is a rubber silicant which you can buy from a BMW dealer, and treat your rubber parts to loosen them and keep them from cracking. In eight years of owning my car I never used this sealant.

To be honest, when I bought my Z3 new, I did the same thing. I called the dealer and complained. The Service Manager was very polite, and told me the same thing I shared with you. It worked, and there is no leak. That was 8 years ago, and I've been dry inside ever since.

My other BMW, a convertible 3 series, automatically lowers the windows 1/4 when the door opens, and automatically raises the windows after the door is shut. The Z3 is a manual do-it-yourself version of this.

Bmw Z3 Rubber Window Seals

If the car is new, get it back to BMW for them to fix it.
If is second hand, the first thing to check is the seal along the top of the window. Over time dirt can build up on the seal with the result of water leaking past it.
If the seal has gone flat of has creases in it, use a hair dryer and heat the seal up to try and get it to spring back to its original position.
If this does not work spray the seal with a light spray of WD40, leave it on for about 10 min. Then remove all the excess oil, this will soften the seal and hopefully solve the problem.

Open slightly the door and lift up on the rear of the door feel any play up and down. That may be worn hinges. Convertibles leak water the windshield header seal may need replacing. Also the body seals. You should never spray pressurized water at a convertible just as it comes out of a garden hose no nozzle.

The Z3 is over-rated. Trade it in for an Audi TT convertible.

sounds to me like the resting position of the windows needs some adjustment .when shut the glass should have a snug fit on the rubber but not so tight that it makes the door hard to shut, you will need to remove the door card to make the adjustment its a bit of a pain to get right
