I have that McAfee security thing on my computer and I am getting very upset that this thing starts a virus scan when ever it wants to. Last night I was in the middle of being on the internet and all of a suddon the computer starts acting up, what I mean to say is that the mouse would not respond, so I looked down at the task bar and noticed that the virus scan was running. Im the owner of this computer and I think I should be able to regulate when these things are to be done. The McAfee thing came with the computer so when it expired I bought another 1 year subscription and this one seems to do everything by it self, I want to run these programs myself.WHAT CAN I DO?

For your PC to be OK, you have to protect it from viruses and hackers!
The virus is a small program that attach itself to other files from your computer and can harm your computer, by restarting it, freezing it or even by deleting your files or stealing your personal information.
To keep your computer safe from viruses you have to use an anti-virus program, like Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Avast, Antivir, McAfee, Bit Defender. Some are free and others have trial versions.
Here you have some links to download the free versions of some of the best anti-virus programs, as well as other security tools:

I used to have McAfee, but use Symantec now. These programs DO have settings that you can change to set the time of an automatic scan. However, if you power off your PC every time you leave, there will never be a good time. Personally, I don't use them anymore at all, and instead I'm very careful about opening email attachments or even clicking on links in emails. I only do scans if I think I'm infected, and then I use free tools off the internet.

You can set the time when it goes off in the preferences, but as you've discovered when it's off and running that's it. Same with CA and several others.
These are the things you only discover by dowmloading the trial copies. I'd recommend downloading 2-3 from the attached list. Run them for a week and see which one annoys you the least. Personally, I found ZoneAlarm the least objectionable.

Antivirus programs are often set to automatically scan at a certain time every day -- for example, midnight. If this is the case, you can probably turn off automatic scanning, or else change the set time to a time when you probably do not need to use the computer.

Calm down my man. I own McAfee as well and i think its great. Why dont you check your options and see if you can disable that auto scan, or at least set it to a time when you are not on your PC.

Erm, dare I suggest reading the manual to see how to adjust WHEN it does a scan ?

manual is likely a PDF file on hard drive, or in the help menu from the main program

There should be settings that will allow you to disable any auto updates/scans. Check in the security console for settings that can be disabled by unchecking them
