No, it's not a dangerous sport when you apply the information and practical training you receive in a accredited diving program. In a nut shell, it's all about manageable risk. You take precautions to minimize it and rely on your training to handle it.
You are far more likely to get killed by a bus, walking out your front door than to get injured or hurt while SCUBA but it can still happen if you don't take precautions or ignore common sense , your training and your level of ability.
Most divers die by their own hand. Most are stupid mistakes that escalate out of control as the diver panics. Panic and diving beyond one's ability and training are the leading cause of death and injury. They usually go hand in hand.
The most dangerous thing to be aware of? Yourself. You will kill you. Leave the ego on the dive boat and prepare for every dive.

Scuba dving does have its dangers; however, it is a really safe sport with the proper training.

1. Never hold your breath. The expanding air in your lungs during an ascent can lead to air embolisms if you hold your breath during the ascent.

2. There is a speed limit on how fast you can ascend. Staying below the speed limit (PADI 60 feet per minute) will bring your chance decompression sickness to nearly 0%.

3. Stay with your buddy. Keep and eye on your buddy and dive with someone that will keep an eye on you. Remember that the gear set-up leads to your buddy being your back-up system.

4. Plan how much air you will need and continually monitor your air. You'll never run out of air if you are monitoring your air throughout the dive and adjust your dive as necessary.

5. Don't touch the wildlife. Do you go into the woods looking for a bear to pet? Do you try to hold pigeons when you are in the city? Why are people surprised when a shark bites them when they grab its fin?

Five very simple rules to follow to stay safe while scuba diving.

Every TV show I see and every book I read that has anything to do about cave diving almost always describes it as the most dangerous and deadly sport in the world. Some of the people using this description are well known cave divers. Do they believe what they are saying? Most of the cave divers I know are not exactly the daredevil type. They are, however skillful and confident. I saw a tape yesterday

Like most things if you don't take proper precautions it can be dangerous, but with proper training it isn't. You are more likely to get hurt getting in your car and driving down to the grocery store.

Never dive alone, make sure you can use a compass correctly so you don't get lost down there, beware of the bends!!! (Decompression sickness)

how much air you have left. that is number one. Any dangerous situation you place yourself in like getting into a boat under water (boat diving) or cave diving. Being aware of wear you are when diving in the ocean so you can get back to the boat that took you out easily.

Also somthing can go wrong with your air tank.

But if you know your stuff and dive with a partener you should be fine.

Scuba is an acronym for, self contained underwater breathing apparatus, and if you are NOT properly trained and something goes wrong with the tank, you might panic and drown.

there is risk to everything, but when done properly and when following the "rules" you learn when getting certified, Diving is very safe!

The equipment is nearly fail safe. of the few diving "accidents" that occur every year, nearly 100% of them are avoidable and due to diver error. (aka recklessness.)

you should get certified, during which time you will learn everything you need to know.
