I may seem to be thick but I am assuming you can have an internet connection similar to a mobile phone to connect a laptop to the intenet anywhere you go. Am I right?

If you have a wireless laptop - you need to be near an access point - some cafes have free access points and they will give you the WEP key to enter in to your computer to access. Access points are also called hot spots. Hotels too often offer free access - the expensive ones anyway. Click the wireless icon - it looks like a computer with ))) next to it and then do a search by clicking view wireless networks. I usually get a few - even the local school - most will be WEP or WPA encrypted. But I get one that isn't and is handy when mine isn't working!

There are several ways you can connect directly from a laptop:

If you are near a wireless hotspot you can use that. These are usually found in coffee shops and hotels, although some towns now have comprehensive access. You'll need to pay for the time you use - when you first connect to a website, you'll be redirected to the subscription page where you can sign up. They usually charge per hour.

A second way is to use your existing mobile phone. You can either use the cable that came with the phone to plug into your laptop, or connect via Bluetooth.

The third way is to get a standalone mobile card. This is basically a mobile modem that fits into your computer's card slot.

Be very careful though when using the second or third methods - they are likely to be expensive. Talk to your mobile operator about the charges for data connection. The first method will almost certainly be cheaper, but you are then reliant on actually being in a hotspot.

With dial-up it's very slow & you have to connect through a phone line. What you will have to do is buy a Linksys Modem from at&t which is inexpensive & it comes with a card if you already don't have a modem for a desktop computer. Then you should be able to find it under network connections on your computer. Don't worry about the other stuff. Once you get your Linksys it will walk you through the entire process & setup is simple. I used to have it on my Dell but I don't need it for my HP because I have WiFi through my desktops modem. WiFi is better you can take it anywhere.

it depends on your location on what companies to look for.
most telephone companies here in our country offers wifi subscription. but it is still better if you use 3G internet or mobile internet because there's almost mobile signal anywhere. you may also use your gprs/3g/hsdpa phone as a modem for your pc or laptop
