at the end of the day, it's not just looking for life, it's advancement of human knowledge, that could have a wide range of benefits. Any life (eg plant or bacterium life) could help us understand better life here, and could potentially lead to cures for certain diseases, and new energy sources, and more.

The quest for life is more than just looking for intelligent beings (as most life forms would certainly not qualify as intelligent), it is looking for so much more.
