I used to have a petrol car but that more-a-less packed up at 118k.
After that I bought a diesel car (I was doing 35k annually), which to run is a lot cheaper, I'm currently averaging 46mpg on a 1.9dci Laguna.
Before the Laguna I had a 1.9d Megane, which I didn't have any problems with but decided to part ex with 175k on the clock for the Laguna.
Looking into the future I can't ever see me owning a petrol car again, the performance, mpg, reliability etc etc is superb on the diesels I've had.

It's actually quite a tricky one this. I have had a diesel and it's wonderful watching the gauge NOT move as opposed to my current petrol car--as it very much does and I have to by high octane and use a special coolant etc. However, replacing a spark plug costs pennies compared to replacing an entire set of glow plugs! Also, having a new cam belt put in a diesel costs a lot more in my area than having the same job done for a petrol car. Also, my car licence is a lot cheaper than my diesel one was.

Petrol power for sure. Have you heard the racket a Diesel makes, especially on cold start-up? Have you seen the clouds of smoke they chuck out? Have you smelt a Diesel exhaust?
Diesels are popular due to the good mpg figures, but they are much more damaging to the environment than a petrol car, and far less efficient. Remember that if a 2 litre petrol engine had direct injection, a huge turbocharger, intercooler etc. like all modern Diesels have, it'd produce 300-400 bhp, like a tweaked Impreza.
Diesel. No thanks. Keep them for buses!
P.S. Buses are why our town centres are so choked with fumes. In a city, what comes out a petrol car's exhaust is actually LESS toxic than what went into the engine.

Diesel without a doubt. I would never go back to a petrol car now as I get brilliant mileage out of my diesel one. Don't go on price, it's very misleading. You will get far greater value for money with diesel.

Diesel.
The diesel engine is more efficient.
Modern turbo diesel engines have a power delivery (torque curve) that better suits modern driving conditions than a typical petrol engine.
However, a diesel car is usually more expensive, so if you don't do so many miles a small efficient petrol car (e.g Toyota Aygo) may be a more economical choice.

Petrol cars currently burn cleaner and are more green than diesel. Diesel normally gets higher MPG. Diesel fuel (I believe) is more carcinogenic.
