I want to know if trading on the pre and post market are different from trading on the normal market. I also want to know how they are diffrent if they are diffrent.

(obviously not the fact that they are before and after the market closes and opens, more detailed then that)

Here's the scoop.

Aside from the routing, here are some important things to note.

Not all stocks trade after hours.

If you put in a stock order at 359P, do not assume that the order will be filled after hours. Most brokerage firms require you to submit a new order for after market hours trading, so as not to confuse the two orders.

Aftermarket volume is considerably less than during market hours, thus the market is much LESS efficient. You can be taken for a ride by thinking the stock is headed one way only to watch it go the other way right after you buy or sell.

If you do submit an order aftermarket, be sure to submit a limit order as you can get horrible prices with a market order. And it fills, be sure to cancel your original order else you might end up with more fills by the next day than planned!

Those are a few of the differences.

Hope that helps!

No, though in many ways the trading is the same, in the pre and post markets, trading is conducted exclusively on ECNs (Electronic Communications Networks), while intraday the exchanges handle order flow. The largest of the ECNs, Archapeligo (ARCA), is where most of the liquidity afterhours is, and most brokers will force you to route an order to ARCA for it to be ready for execution afterhours. Some brokers like Interactive Brokers, will allow you to select whether an order to valid in the afterhours markets before you place it.

I hope this helps!
