The thirteen colonies declared their Independence from Britian July 4, 1776. On July 4th, 1777, Bristol, Rhode Island fired a thirteen gun salute twice during the day in honor of the anniversary. Philadelphia celebrated the anniversary on July 5th in the first modern fashion (parades, thirteen gun salute, fireworks, etc.) Eventually the celebration was solely on the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independnce, and we have been celebrateing July 4th ever since.

In other countries, their Independence Day may not be July 4th. In Brazil, for instance, they celebrate Sete de Setembro on September 7th (since 1822).

I believe the first official independence day was in 1776, so that makes it 230 years, this year it'll be 231, and counting....pardon my math.
