Cold war was between the United States and the former Soviet Union modern day Russia. The Cold War started after WW2 and lasted until the Fall of the Soviet Union. The term "Cold" is used because the countries never engaged in military (hot war) action. The war was fought by each country trying to attain world dominance through economic and technological means, i.e. the race to the moon.
America was in Fear of the spread of the Red flag which was the Fear of the spread of Communism. Consequently, this is why America fought the Vietnam war to prevent the Communist North from overtaking the Democratic South. The cold war was at its peak during the Cuban Missile War Crisis. This is the closet the world has ever come to destroying itself. The former Soviet Union had hidden Nuclear missiles in Cuba, consequently bringing the US and the USSR to the brink of a Nuclear Holocaust.
In closing the war came to an end when the Former Soviet Union`s economy collapsed. This was due to the technological and military arms race between the US. and the USSR. The beginning of the end of the cold war was the Fall of the Berlin wall.

essentially a period of hostilities between the communist empire and the free world. The communist idea was to occupy all the trade routes and the raw resources areas under the guise of "national liberation movements" - which were essentially "screen names" for communist controlled organisations whose only task was to destroy the countries in which they were operating.
To cut the story short, the communists were winning this war (biggest gains were during the Carter presidency) until Reagan upped the ante by forcing the communist empire into massive spending (to counter the "star wars" programme and to combat US supported internal opposition movements).
End effect was the collapse of the communist empire and the resulting freedom of former USSR colonies in East Europe and Asia- most of which promptly joined NATO in order to guarantee that this freedom is theirs to keep.

Of course many so-called "Democrats" in the US and western Europe cannot accept that and is working on destroying the western societies. In their minds just about any murderous dictator is better than western democracy.

I beg to differ.
I'm Polish and I lived under the "socialist heaven".
Never again.
