Renaut Clio1.2RT-1998. Engine cuts out, oil light comes on. Plenty of oil in the car. What is this problem?

It started last year and 2 or 3 different mechanics (including an official Renault garage) have looked at the problem and everytime they say all they can think of is to change the oil, but the problem keeps recurring. Quite worried as quite a serious/dangerous problem if engine cuts out while overtaking on the motorway for example. The car has plenty of oil in it, we check the level everyday. There must be some other problem involving this same oil light. Please help if you know something. Many thanks.

Did you notice whether or not your engine overheated first?? Did your temp gage go very high or a warning light appear?? Check your radiator fan, fuse, and switch to make sure they are in working order. If you repair the engine, and this was the cause, you will only have the same problem AGAIN!! When water gets into the oil, you definitely have a bad head gasket (at least) and maybe a crack in the cylinder head, or a head that got so hot that it warped. Drain the oil, and install cheap oil as a test, first. When the car is cooled down, will it start??? Does it blow smoke from the tailpipe?? Remove your spark plugs and look for discoloration on the tips. This will indicate which cylinders are giving a problem. Many times, simply replacing your head bolts, one-at-a-time, in sequence can solve this problem, and save you from major expenses. If you are NOT lucky, then the head should be removed, taken to a shop for cleaning and machining, and re-installed with fresh gaskets. Doing it yourself would be fun, if you like this kind of thing! You will save big $$$$$$.Use only coolant from your dealership, and in the future, use ELF oil in hyour crankcase. GOOD LUCK!!

It depends on if the engine shuts down or the oil light comes on first. If the oil light comes on first, you need to at least install a temporary manual oil pressure gauge and make sure you are getting proper oil pressure when it occures. If you're getting correct pressure, your oil pressure sending unit is "borderline bad" meaning that it is not reading actual pressure all the time, and that causes your fuel pump to shut off when it reads no pressure. If you are losing pressure, it would probably be the fault of your oil pump.

the oil light coming on and the engine cutting are two entirely separate issues.i would have someone check your fuel pressure and your fuel filter, also your electrical system ,coil pack or spark plugs wires.the oil light coming on,i would check the oil pressure switch.thank you and good luck!
