My Father in law used to say that if anyone asked you what the weather is going to be like tomorrow say 'Same as today' and you will be right more often than not....he should know he was in his 90's and worked on the land all his life.

Predicting weather is very complicated because there are so many different things that have to be taken into account and they're changing all the time.

At any one time there are many different masses of air swirling around the planet, some bring warm weather, some cold, some rain, some sun etc. These air masses move in unpredictable ways, sometimes they run headlong into each other, sometimes they cancel each other out, and sometimes they combine and make the weather worse.

A large part of predicting the weather is watching how these systems are developing and where they're heading. From this, predictions are made about how they will develop in the coming days and hours, how they'll interact with one another and where they'll go.

Sometimes forecasts can be spectacularly wrong because these weather systems can suddenly change direction, new ones can appear or they may do something unforeseen.

Imagine the world was a street and the weather systems are people. You're in a tall building looking down on the street watching the people moving. You can watch a person and see how fast they're moving and in which direction so you can guess where they're going next. Like weather systems the people may stop, they might turn around and go back, they may meet up with other people; new people can enter the street etc.

Before you shake the stick at people, take a minute to figure out exactly what being a meteorologist entails.

First thing you get to look forward to everyday is being wrong...if you NAILED your forecast, someone else heard something different on a different channel and you are guilty by association...period.

It you say it is cold, they want it warm, if you say it is warm they want it cooler. Nothing you say will EVER please everybody. The thing to actually remember, they are here to provide a service to You, its like the tail wagging the dog...NWS/NOAA/AMS etc dont really care what you think. They do hoewever take pride in telling you what nature has in store.

Now, lets actually take a look at the weather...first thing, gotta know numbers...gott aknow how to use them, hope you like physics. After you learn all your numbers, and you know what is happening, throw a wrench into the works, because atmospheric physics and thermo-dynamics of pressure centers and systems is NOT an exact science. No one ever said it was. It is like looking at a stat sheet in March and telling me the final score of the World Series games this year.

As for predicting a Hurricane, I bet you are wrong. NHC has a very firm grasp on short range prediction.

If weather ever becomes an exact science, computers will do it and then you can just unplug the machine for being wrong vice blaming the weather man for not catering you your needs.

And on a final note, the job is Weather PREDICTION, not weather PRODUCTION.

Bummer!
A weather man/ladies job is quite hard. If they predic something as bad as a tornado/hurricane and it doesnt happen the public might not belive them again. If they dont predict it and it does happen...disaster.But you should always watch out for warnings and watches for hurricanes to be on the safe side,if you see something forming seek shelter use yourself aswell as the weather men.
