First one, then the other. The next stage of the Sun's life will be in the form of a Red Giant. This will happen as the H inside is all used up. The energy of the fusion reactions turning 600 million tons of H into He every second keep the Sun's size and color as it is now. When the H is all gone, fusion will stop, the surface will shrink a bit until enough pressure is created to begin He fusion. The resulting energy of this will cause the size and color to change. The surface of the Sun will then be between the current orbits of Earth and Mars. So, Mercury, Venus and Earth will be vaporized as it enlarges. Eventually, even all the He will get used up. The Sun will then blow off some of its mass, and what is left will shrink under gravity into a white dwarf.

humans worrying about what is going to happen in 5 billion years.... I would lay money we are extinct long long before that. We have better chances in self destruction or a wayward chunk of space garbage knocking us into oblivion before the sun bloats and consumes the inner solar system. Actually i think in 3 or 3.5 billion years we will start the long process of getting cooked anyway. Which is kind of ironic that the expression of flying into the sun or falling into the sun is so popular because the sun will come for us, we don't have to fall anywhere. But say just by chance the humans are around and they have space travel... I would assume they had built a space station capable of sustaining life and getting out of the solar system because the whole system will be affected and not a place to be hanging around. Where they're gonna go as a "home" is the question after that. Or just float around and die out lacking resources and supplies eventually.

Why worry about something that may happen in 5 billion years' time when there are pressing problems confronting mankind at this very moment! One thing is certain: Once the earth (and the entire planetary system, and indeed the whole universe) had a beginning, it also has an end. As to when that end may be is an interesting academic exercise, even if quite a waste of brain power in the midst of more pressing matters.

the sun is just like any other sun anywhere in the universe. but swallow up the earth not likely and nope nobody knows how long its life span actually is. even if they did it wouldn't matter cause we wont be around to know and even if we were there isn't anything we could do about it. but before a star goes nova it shrinks in size then most of the solar system would be like the planet Pluto frozen. but eventually the sun is going to go nova and when that happens boom. remember the sun is a giant nuclear bomb so to speak. when the sun goes nova the solar system as we know it will be toast. either from the primary blast or destroyed by the shock wave that follows

It will expand, kick off its outer shell and shrink to a dwarf. 5 Billion years makes you wonder if it's worth fertilizing the lawn.

our sun is to small to explode and is not sure about swallowing the earth cuz the sun will lose gravity as it grows and we may drift far enuff not to be swallowed, butt will become a dwarf
